HANDS IN SPACE PROGRAM—
Availability and Rates

The Astronomy Institute of Maine is pleased to announce the limited availability of Hands In Space to K-12 schools. At this time all programs are presented by either Peter Lord or Peter Homer. Hands in Space is not yet available as a stand-alone museum exhibit.

These intimate programs are inherently flexible, reflecting the team environment so critical to high-performance innovation. They can be tailored to provide a wide variety of short hands-on inspirational discovery experiences, or in-depth explorations into the feel of Science Technology Engineering and Mathematics.

We also have adult programs for teachers and engineers.
 

Short Form

The short form of the presentation demonstrates why the astronaut glove was selected by NASA and Congress for the million-dollar Centennial Challenge Prize Competition. By reaching into space, anyone can immediately feel what it's like to be an astronaut facing the challenge of working in space. Nothing can directly convey engineering principles of pressure, force, and work as effectively as feeling them act on your hand.

Mr. Homer and Mr. Lord share personal stories from their years of experience in bringing ideas to life through hands-on engineering of communications satellites.
 

Long Form

In the longer in-depth program, these aerospace veterans use the astronaut glove to convey the feel of working in high-performance teams. It's all about sharing a clearly-defined goal, the freedom to learn from so-called "mistakes," and a deep commitment to trust and communication. as shown by the "Two Peters from Maine" approach developed for NASA.

Mileage charges apply outside the immediate Mount Desert Island/Ellsworth area.

For schools needing financial assistance, the Air Force Association offers $250 mini-grants suitable for the Hands in Space experience.

Donor Recognition

To recognize significant sponsors of Hands in Space, a custom-made "signature series" astronaut glove can be created.

The hand sizing template will be used to custom fit a glove to any design from a class, school, or special donor. The signature series glove will be manufactured using Flagsuit's patented process, and will feature a signature, company name, or logo in recognition of the sponsor.

All gloves will remain the property of the Astronomy Institute of Maine, to be used exclusively for this educational outreach program.
